Sizing a home or office safe

Most people buy a home safe once and then discover within a year that it is too small. The usual culprits are not the obvious valuables — they are ring binders, a laptop, a camera body, a fire-safe deed box that will not lie flat. It is worth measuring the largest single thing you expect to store and checking it against the interior figures on the product page, not the exterior.

The MiniVault range

The MVEX series steps up in a straightforward ladder, from the compact MVEX-1512-E through the MVEX-2116-E, MVEX-2916-E and MVEX-3516-E to the floor-standing MVEX-4020-E. Each uses an electronic keypad, so opening takes seconds and multiple household or staff codes are simple to manage. If a mechanical dial suits you better — no batteries, unaffected by power loss — the dial-locked MiniVault models cover the same ground more slowly.

What "fireproof" does and does not cover

Fire ratings are tested against paper, which chars around 350°F. That is what the rating guarantees: documents, cash, passports and certificates come through intact. It does not extend to digital media. Hard drives, SSDs, USB sticks and photographic prints are damaged far below that threshold, so if you are storing backups, put them in a media-rated insert or a small data box inside the safe.

Where to put it — and why bolting it down matters

A home safe in the 100–300 lb range is portable to two determined people with a hand truck, and carrying a safe away to open at leisure is the most common way home safes are defeated. Every model here has pre-drilled base holes. Anchoring into a slab, a closet floor or a structural member converts the safe from a container into a fixture, and it also stops it being tipped — a standard tactic that exposes the weaker rear panel and gives better leverage on the door.

Ground-floor or basement placement against a load-bearing wall is generally best: it keeps the weight over stronger structure and puts the safe below the worst of the heat in a house fire, since heat rises.

If you need more than a home safe

These models are built for everyday household and small-office security. If you are storing high-value inventory, bullion or large cash reserves, the independently tested TL-30 rated safes are the appropriate class. For firearms, see Gun Safes; for a safe that hides rather than sits in the open, see Wall Safes and In-Floor Safes.
