Where to start with off-grid power

Off-grid systems are four parts working together — panels that generate, a charge controller that regulates, batteries that store, and an inverter that converts to mains voltage. Getting the balance right matters more than any single component's spec sheet.

Work out your daily energy budget first

Total the watt-hours you use in a day: each device's wattage multiplied by hours of use. Everything else is sized from that number. It is the single most useful hour you can spend before buying.

Then decide how to buy

A complete kit is matched at the factory — panels, controller, wiring and often battery and inverter, all specified to work together. For a first system, an RV, or a straightforward cabin, this removes every compatibility question.

Individual components make sense when you are expanding an existing array, working around a difficult roof, or already own a battery or inverter worth keeping.

Portable and all-in-one units suit intermittent use — camping, job sites, emergency backup — where nothing is permanently mounted.

Three figures people commonly get wrong

Panel wattage is a laboratory rating. Expect roughly 4–5 peak-sun-hours per day in good summer conditions, much less in winter, and less again with any shading. Partial shade on one panel in a series string drags the whole string down.

Battery capacity is not all usable. Lead-acid should not be routinely taken below half charge; lithium can go much deeper and lasts many more cycles. Compare usable watt-hours and cycle life, not headline amp-hours.

Inverter rating is continuous, not surge. Motors — pumps, compressors, power tools — draw several times their running wattage on startup. Size for that surge or the inverter will trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

What inverters come in the Rich Solar kits?

The 24V lithium kits and the 800W Complete kit use a NOVA 3000W pure sine wave inverter. Most of the 48V hybrid kits use one or two NOVA 6500W hybrid inverters, and the Nova 12K kit uses a 10,000W continuous NOVA 12K.

What solar extension cable is available?

10 gauge red and black cable pairs with male and female connectors, in lengths from 10 ft upward. The cable is tinned copper, IP67 rated, built to UL 4703 and rated from -40°F to +194°F.

Which kits include a PV DC quick disconnect?

The 2500W 48VDC 120VAC kit, the 4000W All-In-One Energy Storage System kit, the 6560W kit and the 8000W kit each include a PV DC quick disconnect switch.
