Slatwall vs pegboard vs shelving

All three get things off the floor, and they fail in different ways.

Pegboard is cheap and the hooks are everywhere, but hardboard pegs work loose under weight, the hooks fall out when you lift a tool off, and it is not happy in a damp garage. It suits a light tool wall indoors.

Shelving holds weight well and is the right answer for boxes and bulk. What it cannot do is hold long, awkward things — bikes, ladders, rakes, hoses — which are exactly what fills a garage floor.

Slatwall is the middle answer, and the one built for garages specifically: PVC and PROCORE panels do not care about moisture, hooks lock into a continuous groove rather than a hole so they carry real weight and stay put, and the whole layout rearranges in minutes with no holes left behind. It costs more than pegboard up front and less than fitted cabinetry, and unlike either it can be extended one panel at a time.

How to plan a garage wall

Start with what is on the floor. Walk the garage and list what actually needs a home — bikes, the ladder, the hose reel, yard tools, sports gear, bins. That list, not the wall size, decides how much wall you need to cover and what hooks to buy.

Cover the useful band, not the whole wall. The zone that earns its keep is roughly waist height to just above your reach. Below that the car door and the lawnmower want the space; above it you cannot get things down one-handed. Most people over-buy panel by covering floor to ceiling.

Find the studs first. Everything hangs off the fixings, and fixings hold in framing. This is the single thing that determines whether a wall carries a loaded bike rack or pulls out of the drywall.

Get the first row level. Starter trim at the bottom, checked with a level, sets the line for every panel above it. Ten minutes here saves an afternoon later.

Leave room to grow. Panels and accessories stay compatible within a material line, so a wall started with a Mini bundle can be extended next year. Note which line and colour you bought.

Common questions

Which panel line should I buy?

PVC for most garages — waterproof, affordable, four colours. PROCORE where the wall carries heavy loads. PROCORE+ when the look matters as much as the function. All three share the same groove, so accessories move between them.

Do I need a bundle or loose panels?

A bundle if this is a first wall — it saves you working out the trim and hook list and costs less than the parts separately. Loose panels if you are extending an existing wall or you already know exactly what you need.

Can I install it myself?

Yes, and most owners do. It is a stud finder, a level, a drill and a saw for the cuts. Allow a morning for a single-bay wall, and a second person for the full 8 ft panels.

Will slatwall hold a bike?

Easily, when it is screwed into studs. Bike hooks are among the most common accessories sold with it. Hang the heaviest items over a stud rather than mid-span between two.

What about a rented garage?

Slatwall does put screws in the wall. ProRack is the lighter-touch option — one rail, far fewer holes, and it comes down leaving a repairable line rather than a panelled wall.
